To my sweet girls,

I am active with the African-American alumni group of one of my alma maters, and I look forward to the annual reunions. I spent many years in the city where my alma mater is located and loved my time there. The city is like home and is the place that I go to at least once a year to reconnect with my close friends, sorors and classmates. 

The older I get, the more I value true friendship and unconditional love. When I spend quality time with my close friends, sorors and classmates, we pick up right where we left off – despite the miles and months between us. 

I hope you too experience this type of love, friendship and sisterhood.

Dear girls, 

I truly hope that, when you become an adult, you find unconditional love with the love of your life.

After all of these years, I still get butterflies in my stomach when I hear your uncle’s voice and see his face.

How?

  • I do not hold him accountable for making me happy. I hold him accountable for honoring our marriage vows. I am accountable for my own happiness.
  • I admit that from time to time, I feel like punching him in the face. However, I never have and never would. LOL! 
  • I occasionally ask him what I can do to be a better wife. I listen intently, commit to the actions I know I can improve and “keep it moving” on the rest.
  • I am always honest with him – even if it stings. Before the sting begins, I express my love for him, and I do it again after the sting.
  • He is my top priority. He knows it, and everyone else knows it. I juggle a lot professionally and personally, but I am accessible and available to him 24/7.
