Dear girls,
Life can be hard – especially for Black women and girls. However, we will continue to thrive – as we have done for hundreds of years.
What do I do to cope with the madness? The same things I have been doing for years:
- I am keeping my circle small. It includes my husband, sister and close friends.
- I am refraining from discussing politics at work. When like-minded people at work approach me about the election, I will talk with them. However, that’s it.
- I am unfriending clueless people on Facebook. This is my personal page. Like I do at home, I do not have to invite people into my world who will not “ride” for me.
- I am helping to raise you to be remarkable, strong and courageous women. The world will never love you like your parents and I do, so we are preparing you for that.
- I am remaining vocal about racism, sexism, homophobia and other social injustices. If others do not like it, that’s their problem. My advice? Get a backbone.
I am angry, aware and awoke. At the same time, I am courageous, fearless, inspired and fired up. We have many years of MESS ahead of us, and I am ready to take it on. I will do it and maintain my sense of self. I will remain whole – emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically – and I will encourage my circle and you to do the same. Most importantly, sweet girls, I encourage you to do the same.
You WILL live a full, positive, fulfilling and love-filled life. You are worthy and deserving. You are loved, admired and respected.
Love,
Your Auntie
