Dear sweet girls,

Advice from your auntie

In April 2014, I was caring for the two of you while your mom recuperated from surgery. You were 3 and 7 years old. I am CBC (childless by choice). And I believe I am a pretty smart woman. However, WHAT was I thinking when I gave you, a 3-year-old, some chocolate right before bed?
While bathing you, you laughed hysterically the entire time. As I attempted to put on your pajamas, you were quacking and walking like a duck. Before putting you to bed, you asked me if I was going to remain upstairs with you. I told you, “No, I am going to spend some time with my husband.” You asked (in a shocked voice), “You have a husband?” (By the way, you love your uncle and had just spent a half-hour with him learning your time-tables. However, you forgot that he’s also my husband). LOL!
The next time I give a 3-year-old some sugar right before bed, someone needs to punch me in my face – and I won’t press charges. LOL! #ILoveMyGirls #WhatWasIthinking
Dear sweet girls,
I am a proud auntie!
Big girl, at 12, you were reading at the same level as a freshman in college.
Baby girl, at 8, your teacher wrote this about you: “She is simply amazing! She is a leader and a role model. She tested at the very top of the class for word study, so she is in the advanced spelling group. She is reading above grade level. Perhaps most importantly, she has the strong moral character that every teacher and parent dreams their children will have.”
Your mom is doing a great job raising you!

Dear girls,
I hope and pray you will be advocates for others – including Black women.
If you remember nothing else, please remember these tidbits:
Dear girls,
If you ever decide to pledge a sorority, please keep your eye on the prize – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.! That’s auntie’s sorority!
Our sisterhood was founded in 1913. There is nothing like a Delta. In a room full of thousands of Black women – no matter what color they are wearing – I can spot a Delta woman a mile away. There is just something about those Deltas, and I am proud to be one!
The decision to pledge is yours. The choice to pledge Delta is the only one.
